Over the years, there has been a bit of a concern over how much range you can get out of a singular electric car charge. It used to be that you couldn’t get more than 100 miles on a full charge with an electric car. However, technology has changed dramatically to make sure cards more efficient.
Today you can get 100 or more miles off of a number of electric cars. This provides you with a great deal of support for longer drives. Still, the technology is being updated regularly with an increased chance to get cars to move even faster. You might have to pay extra for a better charge though.
Larger Batteries Help
A key part of today’s electric cars is that they have batteries that last longer. The Volkswagen e-Golf, for instance, increased its battery capacity in recent time from around 25 to 35 kWh. This offers an expanded range of about 120 miles on a charge.
Dense Batteries Work Too
Battery density is also a necessity to review. Density refers to how well energy can be handled within a battery. Lithium-ion batteries being used by many car companies are increasing in terms of their density. For instance, the Kia Soul Electric uses a great amount of cells in its lithium-ion battery to create a larger charge. This helps bring the Soul Electric to 100 miles per charge.
Light Bodies Are Important
Many electric cars are being made with lighter bodies to help them get better charges. The Ford Focus Electric used to have a capacity of 75 miles on its battery but recent editions of the car have used lighter materials in its construction. This keeps the drag and weight down on the entire vehicle. It has helped get the Focus to go about 115 miles per charge without having to make too many alterations on the battery.
Advancements Will Be Made Soon
Car companies are working on advancements to get their electric cars to last longer. The Hyundai Ioniq runs for about 120 miles on a single charge but Hyundai is still developing the car. The company has a goal of getting the Ioniq to go at least 200 miles on a charge before the end of 2018.
The Expensive Cars Go the Longest
Needless to say, you would have to fork over a good deal of money to use an electric car that goes longer. It costs at least $70,000 to get a Tesla Model S that runs for 230 miles. The two motors on this vehicle make it easier for it to go longer distances.
There is a potential that some electric cars will become cheaper in the future. The Chevrolet Bolt EV will go for around $40,000 and offer 240 miles on its charge. Meanwhile, Tesla is planning a new model called the Model 3 that will go for about the same total and offer a similar charge.
Be on the lookout for changes in the future in terms of how electric cars can go further. These cars are only going to get better as time goes along and the technology for them improves.
