Ford Super Duty
On the extreme opposite end of Ford’s spectrum, the Super Duty is a product of simple truck logic: Bigger is better. Introduced in 1998, the Super Duty incorporates distinctly upgraded chassis and suspension components found on the F-150 and provides higher payload and towing capacities. Ford’s first answer to the Cummins, the 7.3L PowerStroke diesel, pumped out up to 275 HP and an impressive 525 pound-feet of torque. Emissions restrictions meant the 7.3L had to be replaced by a smaller 6.0L, then eventually a 6.4L and the Super Duty now uses a 6.7L pushing out a respectable 440 HP and an even more impressive 925 pound-feet of torque at 1,800 RPM. The PowerStroke’s all-iron block and heads are built to take plenty of abuse for extended periods of high load and the engine’s substantial low-end torque ratings make it one of the most capable trucks ever sold.
Reintroduced as the 4th generation in 2017, the current Super Duty uses what Ford calls a “military-grade” high-strength steel frame and aluminum body which shaves off 700 pounds of dead weight, making it one of the lightest heavy-duty trucks currently available. Massively fortified drive shafts, over built axles, a TorqShift-G six-speed automatic transmission, and a commercial-grade transfer case help control the Super Duty’s immense torque. This rugged powerplant and drivetrain means the Super Duty can tow up to 32,500 pounds – a number previously unheard of outside of the commercial truck world. Ford maintains its approach to catering trims to every possible customer, offering up five different packages, two-bed lengths and three F-series (250, 350, and 450).
Customers who want more traditional power plant can opt for a 6.3L BOSS V8 that pushes out 385 HP and 430 pound-feet of torque. The Super Duty of today far out-classes any other truck on the market when it comes to factory power output, towing capacity, strength, and features. The Super Duty is also rated to hold its resale value more than any other truck currently on the market, making it an easy top contender on our list of Toughest Trucks.
