Chevy Impala – 14 Million Sold
We’ve gotta show some Chevy love, and that’s been made easy on this list thanks to the good ole’ Impala. Inexplicably named after a strange, African deer-thing, the Impala is Chevy’s answer to the Camry, Focus, and so many other economy cars – except truthfully, the Impala has always been more.
It’s been more performance-oriented, more well-equipped, more sexy, more exciting, and generally a more attractive purchase for those willing to spend just a bit more cash than bottom dollar. Built way, way back in 1957, the Impala began life as Chevy’s most popular full-size sedan through the mid-80s.
After a short hiatus in the 90’s, the Impala was reimagined as a mainstream front-wheel size, larger sedan with entry-level luxury appointments. Chevy apparently perfected the Impala in 2014, having earned the #1 spot on U.S. News & World Report’s Affordable Large Cars list. The Impala did not perfect just one formula. Instead, it offered loads of configurations for different markets. One option came with rear-wheel drive, a convertible top, and a 5.7L V8.
Later, another version of the Impala came with front-wheel drive and a 3.-something-L V6 motor. Regardless of configuration, the Impala has always been regarded as a comfortable, refined, sporty package. It’s seen plenty of service as a police cruiser, touring car, family sedan, frugal executive transport, and sleeper throughout its 14 million units of production.
