Toyota Camry – 10 Million Sold
The Toyota Camry isn’t one of those cars that anyone bothers to take a second look at. More importantly, though, it’s a car no one bothers to attach a stigma. You see, Bimmer owners get a bad rap for being impatient. Spy a two-door Honda in a parking lot, and you’ll likely assume it’s Johnny’s or Sarah’s first car – new license, best stay away. That Jag sitting in the lot at Starbucks? Probably driven by a snarky mid-level manager at some company.
But the Camry doesn’t betray its owners, even though it’s truly a wonderful car. It’s surprisingly sporty, it’s reliable, it’s affordable, it’s rather well equipped, it’s safe… It’s everything you want it to be and nothing more. More importantly, it’s the poster child of the Japanese manufacturing renaissance era.
See, in the early 80’s, cars weren’t pegged as great investments – unless you bought a Japanese import. Japanese quality control and the rise of modern manufacturing on the tiny island meant that any car rolling into your driveway from overseas would last at least 10 years without major issue. The Camry is the best example of such.
That’s why it easily sold 10 million units, and it continues to be sold by the hundreds of thousands each year. The new Camry is looking particularly mature and impressively equipped, with a design that’s beginning to blur the lines between economy Toyota and luxury-performance Lexus. Inside, one will find a driver’s cabin, complete with optional red leather, LCD infotainment, and even flappy paddle shifters. The new Camry also gets a ton of performance and handling treatments, meaning it’ll continue to remain as one of the best-selling cars of all time.
