The 2019 Volvo XC40 is a compact crossover and has plenty of interior features that are clever. It has the ability to appeal to drivers of all ages, with a strong focus on younger shoppers. The XC40 begins as a T5 model with an all-wheel drive, but a front-wheel-drive T4 version will be arriving later on. For now, you can get that Volvo XC40 T5 as either a Momentum or an R-Design.
A Subscription Model
Coming with the 2019 XC40 is the option of a unique idea, a subscription model. This includes a set monthly fee and a T5 AWD along with coverage for additions like wear-and-tear items, maintenance, insurance, and goodies. With the subscription, there is the option to swap out the auto for a new version after the year, or keep it for two more years then buy it, or just walk away from the subscription. Automotive experts are waiting to see how that subscription model turns out as its focus is clearly on younger buyers.
Under the Hood
The first 2019 XC40 models come as an all-wheel drive, but front-wheel-drive versions will be available later on. This drivetrain will complement the 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 258 pound-feet of torque plus 248 horsepower. It also works with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The result is that the XC40 can reach 60 mph in just 6.2 seconds.
Going with the R-Design trim gives you beefier roll bars, stiffer springs, and larger wheels. All XC40s offer a supple ride. Electronically adjustable dampers will arrive later in the year, potentially enhancing ride quality even more. There are also three ride modes to choose from, each with precise steering.
Exterior
The XC40 has some familiar cues from other Volvo models with a dose of individuality. This crossover has a concave as well as a lip that seems to create an overbite instead of the convex grille on the XC90 and XC60. It still has the signature LED headlights, which flank the grill before reaching in the direction of the stamped clamshell hood. The window line kinks up, heading from the rear door. There is an additional “R-Design” logo on the R-Design models.
Interior
The interior of the XC40 can fit four adults and have room for smaller items in its storage cubbies. There are even foldable shelves and a center armrest trash bin. All trims come with leather upholstery and power adjustment for the driver’s seat. Thanks to the scalloped design of the front seats, rear passengers get enough legroom even if they are tall. In terms of cargo space, the interior has 20.7 cubic feet when the rear seats are upright, which increases to 47.2 cubes when you fold them down.
Technology
On the technology front, the Volvo XC40 has a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster plus a 9-inch touch-screen infotainment system. This includes Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. There is also plenty of standard safety technology, including a rearview camera, emergency responder notifications, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and active lane control. If you want, you can configure the 2019 XC40 with even more safety tech. Pilot Assist, for example, combines adaptive cruise control and active lane control with the ability to follow other cars in a stop-and-go transfer or travel short distances without driver input, provided it is in well-defined lanes.
