Mercedes G Class (G500)
Mercedes is known for their strength and reliability across Europe. The toughest and most impressive of all of Mercedes’ offerings is the G-Class SUV. The G class has been bursting through foliage and climbing over rocks since back in 1979. The G-Class used to be known as the G-wagon. Even that name was a short form. It’s a short form for Gelandewagen.
G-Wagens weren’t sold in the United States to start. However, people and distributors would import G-Wagens to sell to a fairly ravenous group of potential owners. The vehicle was especially sought after by people who are both military buffs who also enjoy offroading. Mercedes has a history of making military vehicles. Admittedly that history isn’t one that they like to advertise, as most German military history isn’t exactly a selling point.
What proves the G-Class is truly tough and indestructible is the role it played in Die Hard 5. Alright, don’t immediately tune out here. Yes, it’s a terrible movie. Yes, it demeans itself and all of the previous movies with that showing. However, there is one incredible scene. While chasing down his son, Bruce Willis ends up stealing a G-Class. He takes that SUV and he smashes it into an assortment of armored cars and other vehicles. They become smashed and damaged while the G class remains pristine. Not running, but absolutely and utterly pristine! The G-Class then shows off its off-road chops by driving over a large number of other vehicles.
The modern G-Class is also the highest end of SUV that Mercedes-Benz currently offers for sale. Prices are well over $100,000. Mercedes-Benz even broke out their AMG performance division for the G class. The G55 AMG has a 493 horsepower engine and other sports features. It turns the vehicle into a road screamer as well as an off-road monster!
