Review: The 2019 Volvo V60

The 2019 Volvo V60 is the latest version of this luxury station wagon. It’s all-new for the model year. This most recent V60 saw a long list of enhancements over the outgoing model year, including a larger interior, sleeker styling, and improved performance.

Styling

For the 2019 V60, exterior styling and interior space go hand-in-hand. This Volvo got an all-new chassis plus body for a roomier interior. The latest wagon is 4.9 inches longer with an increase in wheelbase length of 3.8 inches. Those measurements led to a decrease in the overhangs in both the front and rear. There is also a 2.2-inch drop to the roof height and a newly standard rear spoiler that enhances the streamlined profile of the Volvo V60. Rounding out its first impressions, you will notice T-shaped LED headlights plus elevated LED taillights that come standard.

Interior Space and Feel

V60 Interior

Thanks to the increase in exterior measurements, the 2019 Volvo V60 has a more spacious interior. That includes up to 23 cubic feet of space for storage behind the second row, an increase of 20 percent. For extra storage, look to the hidden compartment underneath the load floor. The V60 has an unsurprisingly luxurious interior in addition to its spacious nature. This comes from class-leading knee space for the supportive rear seats, a City Weave textile interior at no cost, and power-folding rear seatbacks. You even get rear-seat climate controls. Leather upholstery is standard, although the City Weave will also likely be popular.

Performance and Driving

Volvo V60

As mentioned, the performance for the 2019 Volvo V60 is better than in previous years with its enhanced driving dynamics. The multi-link rear suspension works with a double-wishbone front suspension to deliver confidence, particularly with the steering-wheel rim. Depending on the model you choose, you can enjoy a 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque with the T6 AWD. Or, you can go with the T5 FWD version to get the same 2.0-liter engine but with just turbocharging for 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet. The T6 and T5 engines bring the V60 up to 60 mph in 5.5 and 6.4 seconds, respectively. After the autos launch, the T8 plug-in hybrid will arrive with 400 horsepower. In the meantime, the T5 will be the most efficient option with 24 city/36 highway/28 combined mpg.

Amazing Technology

As expected, the all-new 2019 Volvo V60 comes with some of the latest technology. The Volvo City Safety system gives you automatic emergency braking. This will help you avoid cyclists, pedestrians, and large animals. It also has brake mitigation for head-on collisions. Drivers can configure the V60 with cross-traffic alert, Pilot Assist, and blind-spot monitoring. Pilot Assist is particularly useful, as it modulates brakes and throttles to match the speed of surrounding traffic at speeds of up to 80 mph.

In terms of non-safety technology, the Volvo V60 comes standard with the SENUS Connect infotainment system on a 9-inch touchscreen. It comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and has Spotify, Pandora, and Yelp built in. Compared to the previous infotainment system, SENSUS Connect is 50 percent faster in terms of processing power.
