the DeLorean
The gull-winged DeLorean is by far to most famous of our oddly cool cars, and potentially the most iconic cars ever. Impressive for a car that only sold 9,000 vehicles. To start this off, we know the official name is the DMC-12, but since it was the only car they ever built, it should be renamed to just the DeLorean.
The DeLorean had a short life, 1981-1983, we aren’t counting the 2017 DeLorean just the original. What made this car so cool is also what make its life so short. The DeLorean had stainless steel exterior, no car left the lot with a clearcoat or paint. Everyone loves the look of the stainless steel, but if you wish it came in gold, well it did. With a promotion with American Express, DeLorean offered a gold-plated DeLorean to gold card members, but I guess consumers didn’t jump at that opportunity as the only produced 3, 2 of them sitting in a museum (below).
The gull wing doors are what stands out most with the DeLorean, as it was only done a handful of times before this beauty included them. Most of us assume that the downside of gull-wing doors is that you need more clearance for parking to open the doors, surprising the opposite is true with the DeLorean, you need less than a foot to open the door.
Under the hood was a 130 horsepower PRV engine, it wasn’t anything astonishing, but I doubt anyone would purchase the DeLorean purely for performance. But with a top speed of only 85 mph, the DeLorean needed a few upgrades to achieve the coveted 88mphs most owners required.
