Getting an Electric Car Home Charger? Take a Careful Look First

A home charger is a necessity for your electric car. It gives you a source of power to work with in your home. You can charge your car overnight with such a charger. But to make it work, you have to look properly at what is available and how it can work for your needs. By having a great charger, you will get more control out of your vehicle without being too complicated or otherwise challenging to manage in any case.

How Much Power?

The power associated with your electric car home charger is critical to see. It should work with at least 30 amps of power. This is good enough to get your unit charged up properly without wasting more energy than needed.

In addition, a 30-amp unit can get you about 30 miles of range on your battery in about an hour on average. This is based on the optimal condition for getting the charger to work for you.

A Good Cable Works

The cable on your charger can work for about ten to twenty feet on average. This should be long enough to easily reach your car without too much trouble involved. Still, you should look at how well the cable works in your home and how you can get a secure connection running with it.

Can You Move It Around?

In most cases you will have to get your home charger properly installed into an outlet. This is to provide the charger with enough energy so it can continue to work as well as demanded.

A NEMA 14-50 outlet can be added to your garage. This is an outlet that is often used by large heat-generating appliances like a clothes dryer. You can secure the charger onto that outlet without having to mount it anywhere. You can use this to make the charger easy to handle in more locations while also securing it as needed when you don’t use it. You should find other places where it can be plugged in to though so you at least have a source of power to work with when you are away for any purpose.

What Does It Cost?

It will cost at least $500 to get a home charger. It might cost more when you’re aiming to get it installed. This added charge can be cost-prohibitive but it is a necessity.

You might be able to qualify for a free charger. Some governments offer programs that offer free residential chargers to people who buy new electric cars. The selection is rather limited and can vary though. Also, it is doubtful you will be able to get such a charger in your home for free in the United States. That country got rid of its free charger program back in 2013 after it ran for a few years.

Look carefully at how you’re going to use your home charger. It will do well for your vehicle and should give you enough assistance for making it work to your demand without being too complicated.
