20. 1983-1993 Ford Mustang SSP
Used by: US Highway Patrol
Coolest feature: The classic features of a Mustang muscle car
The Ford Mustang is a popular muscle car but from 1983 to 1993, it has been used by the police as a Highway Patrol vehicle. SSP stands for Special Service Package, something that Ford offered to police officers back in 1983. The cars are specifically made for the police force, with its 5-liter engine and a specially-calibrated speedometer. It can run from zero to 140 miles per hour in a matter of seconds. Part of the SSP cars is the LX Highway Patrol Edition, which is a real speedster on the road.
Over the years, Ford incorporated more cop-friendly features in their SSP cars including steel wheels, trunk and engine compartment lights, and an external automatic transmission oil cooler. The company stopped production for the SSP cars in 1993, and all the previous models were either notchback or coupe styles. You might still see one or two of these being used by Highway Patrollers, but there are unfortunately no more modern versions of the cool Mustang SSP cars.
