The Acura NSX hit the market in 1990 as part of the first generation, which lasted until 2005. In 2016, it returned for another generation, but it is the models from the 1990s that really grab our attention.

The team behind the NSX included Masahito Nakano, chief designer, and Shigeru Uehara, chief engineer. Its styling got inspiration from a fighter jet cockpit, and it featured advanced aerodynamics. Ayrton Senna, a Formula One world champion, even added his input later in development.

When it arrived, the NSX earned the designation of being the very first mass-produced auto with an all-aluminum body. Its 3-liter V6 engine used Honda’s variable valve timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system from the 1980s. It also offered either a 4-speed Sports Shift automatic or a 5-speed manual.

The NSX began as just a coupe in 1990. In 1995, a Targa top arrived. In 1997, the NSX got more exciting, with a 3.2-liter V6 engine.

The Acura was a mid-engine supercar, but it didn’t seem like it when you got in the cabin. It was similar to other Acura models, but with a lower roof and much more leather, delivering a higher-end feel. Of course, it also had plenty of hard plastic typical of Japanese cars of the time.

Unlike some of the other sports cars on the market, those who got behind the wheel of the Acura NSX loved that you could actually see out of the car, even in traffic. The NSX got a reputation for being practical despite its power and for needing incredibly little maintenance, even when accumulating miles upon miles. The thing that set the NSX apart from other sports cars of the time is that people who owned this powerful vehicle would actually drive it. This is because it included some features you needed, and service and parts were easy to come by.
