Another affordable electric vehicle on the list, the Kia Soul EV is based on the gas-powered Soul SUV, delivering versatility and plenty of fun. The all-electric range of the Soul EV is an EPA-estimated 111 miles. Although that is less than some competitors, it is still more than enough for the average driver, lasting several days with a regular commute and errands.
There are three ways to charge the Kia Soul EV, including the standard DC Fast Charging. With this feature, you can reach 80 percent charge in around 30 minutes. If you prefer, you can use a standard 120-volt outlet or a 240-volt one, as well. The Soul EV has an eStatus Charge Light, which illuminates at one of three levels. This lets you know when your auto is fully charged.
The Soul EV utilizes a 6.6 kW onboard charger for quicker charging, and the battery is ultra-dense to pack in energy efficiently and maximize cabin space. The battery is a lithium-ion polymer component with 30 kWh, positioned to lower the center of gravity. Thanks to the electric motor, you get instant torque.
The Soul EV delivers many of the same features and comfort elements as its non-EV counterpart. This includes split-folding rear seats that help deliver a versatile cargo space with 18.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 49.5 cubes with it folded. These figures include hidden luggage storage under the tray.
As with other Kia models, the Soul EV uses the UVO system for infotainment and telematics. It works with an UVO eco app and delivers real-time data for driving ranges. It also includes the ability to find a charging point, charging time scheduling, emergency assistance, and voice-command navigation. With the smartphone app, you can get alerts about battery charge status, unlock the door on the driver’s side, and adjust the climate controls. UVO even works with Amazon Alexa for extra voice functionality.
Kia went the extra mile when making the Soul EV environmentally friendly, being the first vehicle to be recognized by UL Environment. There are 19 parts in the interior mass made from bio-based materials and other steps to earn this unique environmental claim. The Soul EV also has reduced volatile organic compounds (VOC) thanks to the use of BTX-free, water-based paints on the floor console, vent, and sound system. The Soul EV even uses Eco Cloth made from plant-based materials, and it is durable and soft.
