- Redshift MX – Alta Motorcycles
Range: 4 Hours
Alright, so the MX is more of a dirt bike than a street grinder, but it brings a very interesting dynamic to this list. If the electric bike is going to become more commonplace and take over, it needs to succeed at every part of motorcycles. The dirt bike and trails are one of the most interesting and can be very difficult for electric bikes to pull off.
The MX has some interesting drive options. You can choose to drive in Trail, MX Race, Performance or Overclocked. Most driving will be done in Trail mode. That lets you get out and explore the trails and roads in a normal afternoon of fun. The range is about 4 hours. It’s difficult to get a traditional range with dirt bikes because there’s so much more acceleration in bursts. That’s what cuts down on the range. Further, when you choose to use it to the max, it can cut down even more. If you’re actually a racer and taking part in some amateur moto events, you probably have about 45 minutes before the bike is going to be empty. If you’re a true expert running in performance or overclocked mode, you can get in only a single 20-minute heat before it’s time to recharge.
The MX has 40 horsepower available to it, though it can be limited to produce less than that. When using the MX Race mode, it’s reduced to about the equivalent of a 250cc dirt bike. This keeps it on an equal footing with potential race competition. Performance mode will give you more power and burst acceleration to get out of a starting gate. Overclocked is not recommended. You can do it! But you could potentially damage the electrics. It will give you every ounce of power that can be squeeze from the bike. To be fair, is that necessary? No. The goal on the Redshift MX is to go enjoy yourself. No point in damaging your bike if you don’t have to.
