Affordable Cars: 2018 Fiat 500X

The 2018 Fiat 500X is not only affordable but also lets you choose from three different trim levels. So, you can get the features you need without breaking your budget. This small crossover is also highly efficient and practical thanks to its small size. At the same time, this crossover is incredibly practical.

First Impressions

The Fiat 500X is currently in its third year and is not the way to go if you want to stand out from the crowd. The crossover features a low-drag outline that is smooth and almost seems to use subtler versions of Audi styling cues. Like other Fiats, the 500X has a “chrome mustache.”

Cabin Styling and Size

When you get inside the cabin of the 2018 Fiat 500X, you will notice large, round gauges plus chunky, round climate control knobs. On top of this, you will find a touchscreen in the center. Keep in mind that the Fiat 500X is actually the very first Fiat designed specifically for the U.S. market. This beginning means that you get a wide cabin with enough space for four people to sit in comfort.

Thanks to modern packaging, the Fiat 500X is able to offer nearly the same cargo space and interior volume as the 500L tall wagon. With the rear seats upright, the 500X has 18.5 cubic feet of space, which increases to 50.8 cubes with them folded down. The top two trims have an adjustable rear floor panel, which can bring the floor to the same level as the seats when you fold them over.

Comfort and Features

Standard features for the 2018 Fiat 500X include remote locking, cruise control, a driver information display, height adjustment for the front seats, 60/40 split rear seat, a fold-flat front passenger seat, Bluetooth, and the 7-inch touchscreen. You can add options like leather on the steering wheel, a center armrest, satellite radio, rear parking sensors, fog lights, rear privacy glass, heated front seats, and 8-way power adjustment for the driver.

Performance and Efficiency

As with other small crossovers, there is no expectation for a wild performance from the 2018 Fiat 500X, and this auto focuses on efficiency over power. The base trim uses a 160-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It always works with front-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual transmission. This combination is the most fun for driving but is not very popular due to its limitations.

Most 500X autos use the 2.4-liter inline-4 engine with 180 horsepower and a 9-speed automatic transmission. Although front-wheel drive remains standard for this engine, there is also the choice of all-wheel drive. Although the 9-speed automatic has previously gotten some questionable reviews in other Fiat Chrysler vehicles, the automaker refined it to make it more predictable and worthy of praise.

Safety

New for 2018, the Fiat 500X now has a standard rearview camera and hill-start assist. If you do not go with the base trim level, you can configure the 500X with automatic emergency braking. There is also an available advanced safety feature bundle with forward-collision learning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high-beam headlights.
