The Ford Mustang is an iconic auto that has evolved greatly over the years. Take a closer look at the comparison between some of the most popular Mustangs to see the differences between certain model years. We’ll be comparing the 2019 Mustang GT to the 2014 Supercharged S197 Mustang GT. Justin from American Muscle owns both vehicles, making it simple to do a side-by-side comparison of the two.
Dimensions
In terms of dimensions, the two Mustangs are incredibly similar. The 2014 S197 has an extra inch in length, 189 inches compared to 188. The 2019 makes up for this with an extra inch of width, 75 versus 74 inches. It is also an inch or so shorter overall.
Front Ends
Just looking at the Mustangs, you will notice some major differences in their front ends. The 2013 and 2014 Mustangs are widely recognized for having some of the most appealing front ends, giving off a muscular and intimidating appearance. This included standard HID headlights and a subtle chin spoiler with a cowl hood. The 2019’s front is among the most controversial you will find in recent years. Many people were less than pleased based on the early images but grew to like it. Some, like Justin, feel that the gloss black front does not fit the overall imagery of the vehicle. However, it maintains its tough feel from certain angles, and those issues can be fixed with aftermarket accessories.
Side
Ford has been very consistent with the side profile of the Mustang over the years, including the sunken-down sheet metal. The quarter window on the 2014 model is more like that of the original Mustangs. Meanwhile, the 2019 version has a more angular appearance. The lower rockers help the 2019 stand out with a more aggressive and aftermarket feel.
Rear End
The rear ends is another area where you will see some significant differences. The taillights on the end of the 2014 are incredibly popular, delivering a retro feel while combining it with LED rings and technology. Justin’s 2014 model has the option of rear quads instead of the single exhaust, which was easier to get for the 2019 model. The 2019 Mustang moves away from the retro headlights to a tri-bar design, which some drivers prefer while others do not. Both models have a piano black back panel, which is eye-catching but scratches somewhat easily.
Powertrains
The 2014 Mustang uses a generation-one Coyote engine, while the 2019 has a third-generation version. The gen-one version delivered 420 horsepower and 390 pound-feet. The gen-one has an 11:1 compression ratio and some room for improvement, though it did great. The gen-three on the 2019 Mustang has a 12:1 compression ratio and adds direct injection in addition to the port injection from the gen-one. Even as the stock version, this version of the Coyote engine is highly capable, getting over 1,000 horses. Just some of the improvements for this engine include better cams, rods, and head design. This engine also has the 10-speed automatic transmission, which is stellar even before aftermarket parts.
