The Affordable 2019 Honda Fit – Spacious at $17k

The 2019 Honda Fit is a compact hatchback that is surprisingly spacious inside. It is also highly affordable and flexible with more refinements than that of previous generations. There are four trim levels to choose from with the Honda Fit, including a starting price that puts this auto within reach of most drivers.

Engine and Efficiency

While the 2019 Fit’s engine is not particularly exciting, it does help this Honda deliver great fuel economy. Every Fit uses a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, and you can opt for a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission. Interestingly enough, this 130-horsepower, 114-pound-foot engine is even the powertrain for the Sports trim with its larger wheels and styling upgrades. When configured correctly, the Fit can get 33 miles per gallon combined. Just be prepared for a zero-to-60-mile-per-hour time of about 10 seconds.

Seating and Interior Space

The seating of the 2019 Fit is surprisingly spacious, with a great deal of headroom for the front seats. The rear seats have reclining functionality and can also fold down to expand cargo space. If you do fold down the rear seats, you will have no problem fitting a bike or two inside the 52.7 cubic feet of space. The Fit takes advantage of Honda’s “Magic Seats” that can flip up or fold down completely.

In terms of seating comfort, the front seats could use a bit more padding, and the rear seats are actually more comfortable for many than the ones in front. The front passenger seat also has an oddly shaped footwell. The tall roof of the Fit does ensure that rear-seat passengers get reasonable legroom and headroom. It is also easy to get in and out from all seating positions thanks to the large door openings. All passengers and the driver are also treated to sound deadening and great insulation within the cabin.

Styling

2019 Honda Fit

The 2019 Honda Fit is unlikely to win any awards for its exterior styling, but it blends in nicely with the crowd. In fact, the design is very similar to that of a minivan but significantly smaller. This minivan-like shape does camouflage the small length and height of the Fit to some extent. Additionally, the sweeping shape that runs from the roofline to the front bumper helps the Fit appear a bit longer. As a bonus, those lines enhance visibility to the front and side. Just be warned that a few rear viewing angles get blocked by the large C-pillars.

The interior of the Fit seems somewhat busy to some thanks to the touch screen’s size and the positioning of the various control knobs. The design, however, does mean that you get plenty of storage space throughout the cabin, such as room under the fold-up center armrest and the large door bins.

Safety

The NHTSA gave the 2019 Honda Fit a five-star overall safety rating. This hatchback offers advanced features like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and active lane control. You also get plenty of airbags and the expected stability control.
