The 2018 GMC Canyon is a popular midsize pickup truck with a comfortable interior, strong engine choices, numerous configurations, and classy styling. Since the Canyon is midsized, it works well for those who don’t quite need the space or towing capabilities of a full-size but want to drive a pickup. There is also a configuration for everyone, including an All Terrain for four-wheeling and the Denali for a truly luxurious feel. You can also opt for a Crew or Extended Cabin. Engines and Capabilities
There are three engine options for the 2018 GMC Canyon, including a 200-horsepower, 191-pound-foot 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and a 308-horsepower, 275-pound-foot 3.6-liter V6 gas engine. Or you can go with the 2.8-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder for 186 horsepower and 369 pound-feet. Towing capabilities vary by configuration. The turbodiesel can handle as much as 7,700 pounds. The gas V6 tows up to 7,000. Depending on trim, you can get either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Those who opt for a four-wheel drive model will appreciate the automatic four-wheel-drive mode that works on all types of terrain. Those who want to occasionally go off-road can consider the All Terrain trim. However, the All Terrain X package is a better option with its Goodyear all-terrain tires.
Styling and Exterior
When you look at the 2018 GMC Canyon, you will be reminded of the larger Sierra. The front has a boxy shape and tall grille for the classic styling you would expect from a pickup truck. There is some car-like softness from the belt line rising up by the rearmost of the roof pillars. If you go with the extended cab, you will get rear-hinged back doors to make it easier to access the rear seats. Crew cabs feel more like an SUV with the addition of a truck bed, including large front-hinged rear doors.
Cabin
Depending on the trim level you choose, the 2018 Canyon cabin can be fairly basic or downright luxurious. All models have soft-touch surfaces and nicely grained finishes. The driver’s seat always has power adjustment. The crew cabs offer more rear-seat space than extended cabs. In terms of features, even the base Canyon SL comes with power locks and windows. Plus, you’ll also get a 7-inch infotainment screen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Most drivers will prefer the Canyon SLE or higher, with its leather steering wheel, alloy wheels, and an 8-inch infotainment screen that can include navigation. Higher trims can also have power for the front passenger seat, leather upholstery, remote start, a heated steering wheel, and Bose audio.
Safety
The 2018 Canyon comes standard with a rearview camera, six airbags, and anti-lock brakes. You can also configure the Canyon to include forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning. However, you will not find a system on the Canyon that automatically applies the brakes. The Canyon also has solid scores in terms of safety ratings.
