The luxurious 2018 BMW X3 crossover delivers the nimble handling you expect from a sedan, standard all-wheel drive, and the premium features you want from a BMW. The X3 continues the styling of its predecessors but has larger intakes and taller glass. The cockpit is also friendlier in terms of infotainment, something modern drivers appreciate.
Making a Premium First Impression
When you approach in the 2018 BMW X3, the crossover will make a strong impression with its familiar styling that has some upgrades. Overall, this crossover is a bit wider and lower than the previous generation. The tall glass areas deliver impressive outward visibility. The rear end has larger taillights and more glass. In addition, the front wheels are further forward to enhance proportions.
In terms of interior styling, the center stack is wider, complete with a high-definition and wide infotainment display. The iDrive control sits next to the shifter joystick, and the dashboard features wood or metallic brackets. Instead of the standard traditional gauges, you get a 12.3-inch screen featuring digital gauges and a legible clock. It works particularly well with the available 12.3-inch display for infotainment. The X3 xDrive30i runs on a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that delivers 248 horsepower plus 258 pound-feet of torque. This engine can reach 130 mph and hits 60 mph in under six seconds. It works with an 8-speed automatic. Going with the X3 M40i will give you a 3-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder with 355 horsepower and 369 pound-feet. With the 8-speed automatic, it reaches 155 mph and just needs 4.6 seconds to hit 60 mph.
Comfort and Other Features
It should come as no surprise that the 2018 BMW X3 is loaded with premium features. All models have power-adjustable front seats featuring synthetic leather coverings. There is always plenty of space in every direction. You can upgrade to enjoy heated and cooled seats and a panoramic sunroof. Rear-seat passengers still get 36.4 inches of legroom, and it is easy to get in courtesy of the crossover’s wide door cuts. Thanks to abundant knee room, you can easily have four 6-foot people in the auto without any complaints. However, it is a bit tight to fit three adults in the rear seat. On the plus side, the rear seat backs have individual recline functionality.
All BMW X3s include a rearview camera with two packages to enhance safety technology. You can get lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. There is even traffic-jam assist to deliver Level 2 autonomous driving.
Storage
As a crossover, the BMW X3 delivers true cargo versatility. It offers 28.7 cubic feet with all seats occupied. Fold the rear seats almost flat and get 62.7 cubic feet. There are also numerous nooks and other storage solutions throughout, including 64-ounce bottle holders in the doors and room for a plus-sized smartphone to sit flat in the console’s charging tray.
