Ford Just Added A Rough-and-Ready FX4 Package To Its Expedition Lineup

Ford just announced its all-new Ford Expedition FX4. This is not a trim level but an options package, and according to Ford’s engineers, it’s their most off-road ready Expedition literally ever. The FX4 package includes a long list of modifications poised to make this vehicle much tougher than your average Expedition.

(Keep in mind, the Expedition is widely considered to be Ford’s family SUV. Ford estimates that about 20 percent of its owners actually use their SUV for off-roading, an estimate seems a little high to us. But we digress…)

Let’s go through what’s included in the FX4 options package.

First, there’s Ford’s patented electronic limited-slip differential. What the heck is that, you ask? This advanced handling technology allocates power to the wheel that has the most grip, giving the entire vehicle better overall traction. Nice.

Plus, there’s the rear axle differential ratio of 3.73:1, which is guaranteed to give the Expedition a bit more prowess when it comes to grip and towing capacity—so far, it’s rated best-in-class for its 9,300-pound maximum towing capacity.

And, the whole kit includes a brand-spanking-new set of beefy shocks and all-terrain tires that may be able to balance both traction and road noise. Did we mention the tires are mounted on 18-inch aluminium wheels? All of these modifications have been added to improve the FX4’s off-road traction. Though it still doesn’t compare to the F-150 Raptor, it looks pretty darn good for a family SUV.

Of course, with all that extra off-roading capability, Ford’s also added some protective elements, including rubber floor liners, chrome running boards, and shields to keep the vehicle’s vitals safe and sound for the ride. The FX4’s actually has seven different skid plates beneath the vehicle, which should be sufficient to protect the truck from on-course obstacles while also improving both its departure and approach angles.

The FX4 has an aluminium-alloy body and extra-strength steel frame, making it a whopping 300 pounds lighter than the Expedition.  Ford’s also stamped it with some exterior badging, in case anyone gets confused about which package this is.

The FX4 will also come equipped with Ford’s fancy Terrain Management System™, which actually enables the driver to select different modes based on different driving dynamics and weather conditions, including snow, sand, mud, and more. According to Ford, this advanced technology is meant to inspire “off-road confidence” in the SUV’s driver.

But as for the rest of the Expedition FX4, it’s pretty much identical to the standard 2018 Expedition Ford announced earlier this year. Under the hood, you’ll find the same turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Expedition reaches 375 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. It seats eight people. (You know what they say, the family that goes off-roading together stays together.)

Those looking for a more powerful engine can opt for the 2018 Platinum, which is equipped with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost but has a power rating of 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. (It drinks 93-octane fuel.)

All things considered, this powerful ride should be able to handle trails and unpaved roads without batting an eye. It hits dealerships this fall, along with the rest of the Expedition lineup.
