Yes, the Mini Countryman is a Mini. But does that mean that it feels and performs like the Mini’s of old? The original Mini Cooper came about because the world was interested in small and economical cars. It was a stylish car of the times and a representation of all that was Britain at the time. Needs evolve, however. After several generations of varying car needs, we’ve come to the era of versatility. Cars that can do multiple things are now all the rage and almost a requirement. The crossover continues to dominate new cars introduced and the sales are continuously great. The Mini Countryman is Mini’s capitulation to the needs of the people. There’s nothing mini about the Countryman.

The new Countryman is working to correct the flaws of the previous generation inside and out. The styling feels like it’s been eroded by the wind to something a touch classier and more interesting while retaining playfulness.

The Countryman offers up a variety of engines for your delight. You can choose from any of the following:

  • 136 hp, 1.5 liter gasoline powered (turbo)
  • 192 hp, 2.0 liter gasoline powered (turbo)
  • 136 hp, 2.0 liter diesel powered (turbo)
  • 190 hp, 2.0 liter diesel powered (turbo)
  • 224 hp, plug-in hybrid

This is the first year that Mini is offering a hybrid version. It combines their basic 1.5 liter inline three cylinder engine with a plug-in electric motor that provides an additional 88 horsepower. The car can feel a touch sluggish at times and it doesn’t have the same handling a standard Mini Cooper has. In the quest for versatility, some of the fun has been removed.

As far as the inside of the car, this is where the best improvements have been made. The 2017 mini line has a lot more space inside. The previous model could be cramped in certain places and wasn’t great for taller people. In addition to the extra space, the interior is far more refined. The surfaces look and feel better and the center console has more options and looks far more appropriate.

Alright, let’s talk price. The Mini Countryman is not a cheap crossover. The base model is starting at just under $27,000 and things rise quickly. The Mini is decently equipped so you may not need to go too heavy with the options. Upgrading your engine is probably something you’re going to want to do unless your Countryman is just meant to drive to school and back. If you’re looking at the Countryman Hybrid Plug-In, you will need to pony up. It’s starting just under $37,000. Depending on potential rebates on hybrids in your region you might be able to reduce the overall costs down. The Mini Countryman is a solid car. It’s got some allure and is certainly multi-faceted. You’re not going to want to take it out as an extreme off-roader but it has some good utility. The downside is that some of the fun has been sucked out of driving the Countryman. In comparison to other Mini’s it falls flat in the joy category. That’s kind of a big deal. Joy is part of why Mini’s were invented.
