25 Most Iconic Sports Cars Ever

Chevrolet Camaro

1967 Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevrolet Camaro is both a classic in the world of iconic sports cars and still a popular choice to this day. The original production run of the Camaro lasted from the 1967 to 2002 model years, with a second production run beginning in 2010 and still going strong. The Camaro is now in its sixth generation, four of which were part of that first production run. This vehicle is typically called a pony car, but some variations are known as muscle cars. When the Camaro arrived as a 1967 model, it was designed to compete with the Ford Mustang.

1974 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

The initial Chevy Camaro shared major components, including the platform, with the Pontiac Firebird, another sports car that was new for 1967. The idea behind both of the models was to give the average driver the experience of driving a sports car. They both featured a separate front subframe with unitized body construction, space for four people, a short deck, and a long hood. Two Camaros bodies were available, letting drivers choose from a convertible or sports coupe. From there, there were 60 different factory options, including four engines. Those engines could be anything from a straight-6 that was 250 cubic inches to a 396 V8.

When the Chevrolet Camaro returned after a hiatus for the 2010 model year, the fifth generation had a new platform and a complete redesign. We had already seen a 2006 Camaro Concept followed by a 2007 Camaro Convertible Concept, so there was a reasonable idea of what to expect. The coupe’s production started in March 2009 with three trim levels, with most having a 312-horsepower engine. The SS had a 6.2-liter V8 with 426 horsepower.

2019 Camaro ZL1

Jumping ahead to the present, you can still get a brand-new Camaro if you want to drive a modern version of this iconic sports car. The 2019 Chevrolet Camaro can be surprisingly affordable given its amazing history. Or you can enjoy up to 455 each of horsepower and pound-feet of torque with the top of the four available engines. All versions of the Camaro are athletic and fun.

Since this is a modern vehicle, the latest Camaro also comes with plenty of modern amenities, such as a Driver Mode Selector and the option of 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot capabilities. You also get new LED headlights and newly sculpted hoods that are taller and frame reimagined grilles. The rear of the latest Camaro features rounded taillamps inspired by the auto’s heritage.
