Getting to Know the Diesel Engine

The Equinox Diesel uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that delivers a truly impressive 39 mpg on the highway, letting you save money at the pump and minimize your impact on the planet. This figure is accompanied by 28 mpg in the city and 32 mpg combined. If you opt for all-wheel drive, the only difference is that the highway rating drops to 38 mpg. The only downside of the diesel powertrain is that it is definitely louder than its gas counterparts at startup. However, it’s not to the point where it is likely to annoy you or even be noticeable to most. Once the engine warms up, it quiets down right away.

With 137 horsepower, the turbodiesel doesn’t seem particularly powerful on paper. However, it’s more than enough to propel the Equinox on most of your adventures. The real benefit is the 240 pound-feet of torque that arrives at 2,000 rpm. The 6-speed automatic transmission works seamlessly with the diesel power plant. Although you will have more than enough enthusiasm on your drives around town, don’t expect to win any acceleration competitions with the Equinox Diesel, as it takes 9.4 seconds to reach 60 mph. As long as you’re aware of this, however, it’s easy to adjust your driving habits to reach the speed you want, which the Equinox will have no problem maintaining. You should also keep in mind that the towing capacity for this SUV is 1,500 pounds, compared to a 3,500-pound rating for the 2-liter gas powertrain.

Versatility

As an SUV, the 2018 Equinox Diesel has the versatility you need, from the 60/40 split and folding rear seats to the rear liftgate that you can open with your foot and features programmable memory height. If you do choose to fold down the rear seats, you get 63.5 cubic feet to hold all of the cargo you need to bring with you.

Trim Availability

One of the important things to keep in mind if you are considering the 2018 Equinox Diesel is that Chevrolet limited this option to the top two models, the LT and Premier. This means that you will spend a bit more than you necessarily would on an Equinox with the gas engine, but you also get more. Just some standard features for the diesel models include heated front seats, Chevrolet MyLink with a 7-inch touchscreen, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Lane Change Alert featuring Side Blind Zone Alert.

Technology on Offer

As the top trims of the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox lineup, the diesel offers all the technology and safety you could want. Opt for a surround vision camera, an 8-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, the safety alert seat, and 4G LTE Wi-Fi to get the latest technology.
