You may hear the Mercedes 500SL referred to as the R129, which is its designator for the generation of the SL Class lasting from 1989 to 2002. The 500SL, in particular, was available from 1989 to 1998, and there were 79,827 units produced. Like the other R129 models, this Mercedes was filled with technology, showcasing the height of modern conveniences in a luxury vehicle. The models had a power-operated roof and a dual-range four-speed automatic gearbox. The pop-up rollover bar reacted in just milliseconds, protecting passengers, while further safety came from the traction and stability systems and numerous airbags.

The Mercedes 500SL used a V8 with 32 valves and 326 bhp. Although the initial models only worked with the four-speed automatic, later ones offered a five-speed, as well. This Mercedes and the other SLs in the R129 designation were real sports cars thanks to their performance.

Previously, the SL-Class had delivered luxury, but not the performance specs. Combine that performance with the thrills of a hardtop, and you were ready to enjoy the breeze in your hair. The only drawback is that the standard liftoff hardtop required two people to get it off.

Many actually consider the 500SL to be a better choice than the 600 since the latter does not seem much more powerful when on the road, yet its additional weight makes it seem a bit unwieldy. Of course, any SL Class from the R129 generation will likely be thrilling. The only thing to keep in mind is that you will spend an OK amount if you want to get your hands on a Mercedes 500SL. At the very least, they are actually affordable and possible to find, unlike some other models on this list.
